A personal website and online CV

Hi. I'm Matthew Cole a software engineer an experienced professional

About Me.

I'm an experienced professional software engineer. I have experience with front-end frameworks, object-oriented programming, UX design, and databases. Almost as important as my technical skills is the ability to understand and anticipate business needs and the experience of the end user.

Outside of my professional life, I am an avid gamer and creator/modder. I also have five dogs and generally love animals of all sorts. Additionally, I volunteer with a high school computer science club as a community advisor.

I am experienced with API development, object-oriented design patterns, and an eye towards optimization and reducing time complexity.

Designer

I have an excellent understanding of what design decisions are effective at getting engagement from users. I can leverage color theory, strategic whitespace, and visual feedback signals to achieve this end.

innovator

Innovator

I am always thinking of how things could be better. At the end of the day, there are deliverables that have to be met, and a real product now is better than a perfect product that exists only in theory, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for iterative improvement.

Skills & Abilities.

As anyone with extensive full-stack experience can attest, quantifying experience with individual technologies can be an ineffective means of conveying experience, especially in environments where learning and experimenting with new technologies is paramount. That being said, the HR world finds such lists useful, so here is a partial list highlighting some of my skills.

Education.

People who see my résumé often tend to make a note of the diversity of my educational background. I went from a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs to an Master of Science in Applied Computer Science. The unspoken implication is that these are vastly different ways of thinking.

There is a lot of truth to that, but I consider a broad outlook on life to be a positive thing. Prior to marriage, I had intended a career in the intelligence field. While I no longer consider that a plausible option, I think the same instincts that put me in the 99th percentile in the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test can serve me well in any field.

In a rapidly changing world, having experience working closely with co-workers in places as diverse as the UK, Argentina, Ukraine, India, and Singapore is the sort of opportunity where knowledge of a broader world is an asset.

Having worked with a variety of companies from large to small, I have come to recognize the importance of a positive workplace culture and long-term prospects for growth. Over time, I have become more discerning when it comes to these qualities. If I express genuine interest in a company, it's because I have researched its values to the best of my knowledge and believe them to be in alignment with my own.

In my next opportunity, I am looking for long-term stability in an innovative environment where I can experiment with new ideas and grow as a software engineer.
